How to Check Direction for Home Using a Watch

July 2, 2024 – Checking the direction your home faces using a watch is a practical and straightforward method that relies on basic principles of navigation. Whether you’re interested in aligning your home according to Vastu Shastra or Feng Shui, or simply curious about its orientation, this method can provide reliable results. Here’s a detailed guide on how to use a watch to find the direction of your home.

What You’ll Need

To perform this method, you’ll need the following:

  • An Analog Watch: Choose a traditional analog watch with hands that indicate hours and minutes.
  • Sunlight: Perform this method outdoors on a sunny day when the sun’s position is clear and shadows are distinct.
  • Time Awareness: Have a general idea of the current time to use as a reference point.

Steps to Use a Watch

Follow these steps to determine the direction your home faces using a watch:

  1. Hold the Watch Properly:
    • Hold the watch flat in the palm of your hand with the face pointing upwards.
    • Ensure the watch is level and steady to get an accurate reading.
  2. Point the Hour Hand Towards the Sun:
    • Use the hour hand (the shorter one) and point it directly towards the sun. This method works best during daylight hours when the sun is visible.
  3. Find South:
    • Halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark on your watch is south.
    • For example, if the current time is 10:00 AM, point the hour hand towards the sun. South would be at the 2 o’clock position on your watch (halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark).
  4. Determine Other Directions:
    • Once you have found south, you can easily determine the other cardinal directions:
      • North is directly opposite south.
      • East is 90 degrees clockwise from south.
      • West is 90 degrees counterclockwise from south.
